Hello Love Activist Luminary Friends!
In this episode of the podcast, I'm joined by feminist life coach Taina Brown (she/her).
Together, we explore how aligning with your values equips you to navigate and eliminate burnout, imposter syndrome, and other common challenges in life and work.
We also discuss how to use your values as a compass to make decisions and design your business so it supports you well, especially in times of crisis.
Taina is an elder millennial, Jeopardy enthusiast, and dog mom to senior dog influencers, Luna and Foxy. With the help of her community, she's building a world where people don't feel the need to live busy and burned-out lives, laugh in the face of imposter syndrome, and challenge the status quo.
Listen in to discover how to:
Lead as an anti-capitalist without getting pulled down by extractive values
Draw on your values to design a business that has you feeling your best
Prepare your business to run without you if you're unexpectedly unavailable
Overcome imposter syndrome and comparisonitis
Reignite your creative spark when you feel stagnant or stuck
"You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time."
– Angela Davis (quoted by Taina in this episode of Love Activist Luminaries)
7 ways to design your resilient, values-aligned business:
Clarify and Embody Your Values: Start by identifying the values at the heart of how you live and want to run your business. What are the principles that light you up? That you're unwilling to compromise? What do your values feel like in your body? How can you use this information to create a compass for navigating your work-life?
Align Values to Business Practices: How well do your current business systems and practices align with your values? Are there areas of misalignment? Think about where you might be leaning into extractive habits—like overworking or undercharging—and where small, intentional changes could bring you more in sync with your values.
Reframe Burnout and Imposter Syndrome: When feelings of burnout or imposter syndrome arise, use them as signals. Ask yourself: Am I out of alignment with my values? What's asking to shift? Challenge limiting thoughts by asking, "Who said that, and is it true?" What steps can you take to create space for self-empowerment?
Stay Curious in Moments of Transition: Whether you're facing unexpected life changes or a shift in your business, ask yourself: How can I approach this with curiosity? How is this an opportunity for growth or creativity?
Be Emergency Prepared, Create Smart Systems: Imagine if you were pulled away from your business and unable to actively run it. What systems do you have in place now that can operate without you? What practices, procedures, or systems need to change in order to run without you, or with the help of a VA or other colleague? Who can step in and handle key activities when you're unavailable (e.g., letting clients know you'll be away, rescheduling appointments, etc.)? Consider what tasks can be automated, delegated, simplified, and eliminated.
(Re)Ignite Your Creative Spark: If you feel stuck or stagnant, try changing your environment. This could mean working in a different space for a day, attending a networking event, or simply rearranging your workspace.
Focus On Your Path: Finally, if you feel comparisonitis creep in, write yourself a permission slip to let that shiz go and trust you’re exactly where you need to be. Everyone's journey is different. Determine what you need to stay true to your course and navigate using your values as your compass.
